Overview

Myakka River State Park covers more than 37,000 acres (58 square miles) along Florida's first state-designated wild and scenic river. A 7-mile scenic drive passes oak and palm hammocks, grassy marshes, and the Upper Myakka Lake, and hikers can explore more than 39 miles of trails through dry prairie and pine flatwoods.

eBirders have reported more than 255 species in the park. The elevated canopy walkway and tall observation tower are a family favorite.

Where to park

Enter at the main (south) gate and Ranger Station on SR 72 (Clark Rd). Along the main road you can park on the shoulder at Powerline Road and just before or after the Main Bridge (0.9 mile in). The Canopy Walkway has its own lot, and the concession and boat ramp area has a large lot. The north gate is open to cars only on weekends and state holidays, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Trails and viewing spots

  • Main Bridge, 0.9 mile from the entrance: grebes, gallinules, Wood Stork, ibis, egrets, spoonbills, and alligators.
  • Powerline Road: hawks, wrens, vireos and warblers; Osprey may nest on the poles.
  • Canopy Walkway and observation tower, with a nature trail for longer walks.
  • Concession and boat ramp area: a footpath leads to where the Upper Lake flows into the river.
  • The Birdwalk boardwalk was badly damaged in 2022 and is still closed. In the dry season, an informal path on the dry lakebed gives lake views; bring a scope.

Tips

  • Check the park's alerts before you go. The park can close during floods.
  • Bring your own water: the park has posted notices about drinking water being unavailable.
  • Backcountry trails can be poorly marked. Plan and pack accordingly.
  • Boat and tram tours, plus canoe and bike rentals, run from the concession area.

Accessibility

The Florida Birding Trail lists accessible restrooms and accessible parking, and the park lists accessible amenities. Much of the birding is from the paved scenic drive.
